World Literature and Composition

Description:
Designed for first-year students, this course involves the development of critical reading and writing skills along with other essential academic skills like speaking, listening and analyzing. Our studies will take us around the globe as we sample great literature from the United States,Europe, Africa, and the Middle East. We will examine relationships between the various cultures and their artistic creations, focusing on the universality of the human condition and specific cultural practices that shape societies. We will read fascinating stories, which explore the rich and complex texture of the human mind. We will also work to develop writing, with an emphasis on
grammar, sentence formation, usage, mechanics, and diction. Study, organization, presentation, and research
skills will also be emphasized.
AP English Literature and Composition

Description:
This year long, college level course is reading and writing intensive and provides preparation for the Advanced Placement exam. It is designed to engage students in the careful reading and critical analysis of imaginative literature. Students will gain a better understanding of ways writers use language to provide meaning and pleasure. Students will read works from several genres and periods from the sixteenth century to the twenty-first and will consider the social and historical values they reflect and embody. Writing is an integral part of the course and will focus on the critical analysis of literature. Instruction will include attention to idea development, organization, style, and writing conventions. This class meets five days a week.

British Literature

Description:
Enter a magical world where druids, knights, dragons, and fairies thrive. Where chivalry and romance abound. And where love, politics, religion, and class are the ingredients for both comedy and tragedy. This course will sample British Literature from the Anglo-Saxon period, the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, the Enlightenment, the Romantic and Victorian periods, and the Twentieth Century. Among other tales, we will read the Old English epic Beowulf and the Middle English masterpiece The Canterbury Tales. For more humor we’ll turn to satire of the 18th century and for horror we’ll examine Mary Shelly’s classic Frankenstein. And no course would be complete without Shakespeare! This course offers an exciting adventure to another world of not so long ago. Oral language, critical reading, analytical writing, and research will all be emphasized.
American Literature

Description:
Open to sophomores and juniors, this course provides preparation for the two English SOL tests in addition to introducing students to the literature of our country. Students will read novels, short stories, poetry, plays, and non-fiction from many different time periods with a focus on understanding the impact a particular historical era has on literature (and vice versa). Students will practice composition by submitting at least three (3) page papers with an emphasis on process and revision.

AP English Language and Composition

Description:
This year long, college level course is reading and writing intensive and provides preparation for the Advanced Placement exam. This class meets five days a week.
This course is rigorous and will require consistent daily effort from the student. Two textbooks will be issued to students, and additional readings, including readings to be completed during the summer prior to the
first class, will be assigned. A flash drive is required for the course. Please note that this class meets five days per week.
